Getting the Perfect Bridal Skin

I have always known skincare was an important part of great makeup but until I decided I was doing my own wedding makeup I hadn’t implemented a strict skincare routine; tailored to my skincare issues and I didn’t really understand my skin.

It was important to me, as it would be to any bride, that my makeup looked flawless and in order to achieve that, my skin needed to be smooth and clear. Understanding the issues you have with your skin and what you want to achieve will help you to tailor a routine that will help create smooth, soft and healthy skin.

I am going to give you my tips and tricks and products that I use to get the skin I wanted and maintain it after the wedding.

Identifying Your Issues

Understanding your skin is the first step to achieving the skin you want. Its important to identify the issue that you have .e.g. blocked pores, dry skin, acne etc.

The best way to understand what your skin issues are is to stand in front of the mirror, without makeup and write down what you want to change about your skin. This is a great exercise in coming to terms with the real skincare concerns you have and it will help you when researching into the products you can use to help combat the problem.

My main skincare issues were blocked pores, which more often than not turned into spots or bumps under my skin, I often squeezed them out with my fingers which is traumatic for the skin. I also had dryness around my mouth and on my forehead, which foundations would latch onto and it would make my makeup look cakey. In addition to this, as you can see from the picture above, I have a dull complexion.

2. Researching Products

Before I went shopping I did a lot of research and reading into my skincare issues and the best products to use to combat them. I found that the products that were most recommended had a few common ingredients in them and so I researched those ingredients and their benefits.

This is a great way to understand what products your skin needs daily to be maintained and the benefits of using them daily. It is one thing to understand your skin but your need to also understand why you are using the products you are using and how they benefit your skin. Remember when implementing a skincare routine you need to be able to do it daily in order to get the best results – this is something I was not doing before.

IMG_2563From all of my research I found that I needed to introduce Hyaluronic Acid (great of dryness) and Glycolic Acid ( prefect to retexture your skin and unblock pores). I also needed to introduce a mask once a week as a minimum to help rejuvenate my skin from daily life stresses.

This is not just specific to my skin, these ingredients and a mask once week is beneficial for all skin types and you can find ones which are tailored to your skin type. It is however, the best method to achieving amazing looking skin especially if your a bride.

3. Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is a great moisture binding ingredient which helps to keep the skin plump and hydrated, so using serums and creams which contain this hydrating ingredient can keep your skin looking youthful. It also helps to reverse the loss of collagen in the skin, something you will notice the older you get.

I began by introducing the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Cleansing Gel (£7.99)the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel (£12.99) and the Evolve Beauty Hyaluronic Serum 200 (£30.00) as part of my day time skincare routine. I notice after 2 weeks of using these three products together every morning that my skin began to feel more firmer, hydrated and plump. My skin felt healthier and looked healthy too. I have been using this morning combination since October 2017 and I have not turned back. Just by introducing hyaluronic acid into my skincare has changed the way my skin looks and feels.

The Neutrogena Hydro Boost range was a recommendation from a number of bloggers and it does exactly what it says on the tin. The water gel feels and smells amazing on the skin. It is literally like putting water on your face.

The Evolve Beauty Hyaluronic Serum 200 was a gem that I discovered at a blogging event and I have not put it down since. The product itself is handmade and organic which makes it that much more amazing to use. Since introducing this serum to my morning skincare routine it has made my skin soft and plump.

As I mentioned before I think that Hyaluronic acid is a must for all skin types in maintaining firmer youthful skin. If you do not already have it as part of your skincare routine then I recommend that is something that you introduce to it, you will no visual and physical difference to your skin.

Another amazing product which I have been using for a lot longer than these above, is the Urban Veda Radiance Exfoliating Facial Polish (£13.99), I alternate this product with the cleansing gel because this exfoliates the dead skin cells and deep cleans my pores. This is one of the products that has been a great help in unblocking my pores and keeping them unblocked.

This particular facial polish combats dry, dehydrated and dull complexions (like mine) while still brightening my skin. In addition, it smells amazing too.

The Urban Veda has a range of different facial polishes which suit different skin types but the note that the you need to take away from this is to introduce an exfoliating face wash to the your routine to help remove the dead skin cells.

4. Glycolic Acid

As part of my night time routine, after a lot of research, I decided to implement glycolic acid. I first experienced this product during a bridal facial from Sedicure Salon and it really made a difference to my skin texture in the one use (this may have been at a higher concentrate then the products discussed below).

Glycolic acid helps to loosen the dehydrated skin cells and increases the rate of exfoliation to help minimise fine lines, uneven texture and dullness. It does this by dissolving the bonded dead skins cells on the surface of the skin and exfoliates them, which then helps to clarify the skin to create a more even texture. Note, it does sting a little but you will get used to it.

Glycolic acid used in moderate concentrations can be very beneficial to your skin. My biggest tip is to identify the right concentration for your skin issues before using glycolic acid:

Concentration under 4% – low level of exfoliation and can be added to an acne formula at the lower levels to enhance the detoxification of the skin and help to re-clarify it.

Concentrations of 4% to 10% – this is more for those of you looking to target signs of aging, dullness and re-defining skin texture.

Any glycolic acid above the 10% should be administered by a trained professional – do not use this without medical advice.

Another tip that I must give you is, if you decide to use glycolic acid as part of your day time routine you must use sunscreen.

I have spoken about these two amazing products in a previous skincare blog: Top Skincare Products of 2017, the Nip and Fab Glycolic range, specifically the cleaner and the liquid glow have been apart of my skincare range since September 2017. These products have re-textured my skin from spotty/bumpy to smooth . I noticed the difference in weeks of using the product. The Liquid Glow is a concentrate of 6% and ad I mentioned above this is more so that I can re-texturize my skin and combat dullness.

I think that by just washing my face with the cleanser followed by the liquid glow on a cotton pad all over the face has helped to create a smooth base for my wedding makeup and even now my skin is smooth and bump free.

5. Masks

Introducing a mask, as minimum once a week is so beneficial to your skin. The right face mask can help to alleviate your skin concerns and is a great way to pull out impurities in the skin.

I have a very stressful job and so I find that my skin needs that pick me up at least once a week to help deep clean it.

I usually enjoy using clay masks or masks with ‘bit’ in it. It helps to clear away the dead skin cells and helps to keep my skin smooth and bright. One of my favourite discoveries during my wedding skincare journey has been the Evolve Beauty Radiant Glow Mask (£20.00).

This incredible organic mask is made from raw caoco and clay with small coconut granules which helps to exfoliate the skin and purify it. I can not explain how smooth, hydrated and bright this leaves my skin every time. It is a small tub of rich gooey goodness.

The best part about using this mask is that it smells like chocolate, it is incredible on the skin and on the senses. I have used this product a number of time during my wedding skincare journey and even now, it is my go to mask.

No matter what your skin type is there is a mask out there for you and just by introducing a mask at least once a week is a step to achieving beautiful smooth skin, ready for makeup application.

The Result

Now that we have talked about my bridal skincare journey in detail and the products that I used, you may be wondering how my skin looked on the day?

After 4 months of a continuous day and night time skincare routine, using these amazing products and steps I mentioned above, I got the skin and makeup I wanted on the day. These photos have not been photo shopped in any way. My skin and makeup was as smooth as the pictures show it to be.

This skincare journey that I have taken in becoming a bride has taught me so much about my skin and how to care for it. It is definitely more than simply washing your face in the morning and at night, you need to understand your skin and what it needs. It is almost like your skin is tell you what it needs by reacting the way that it does and all you need to do is listen.
